Proof That We Existed : Experimental Film Director Finn Grey Paul

Finn Grey Paul is a California-based experimental filmmaker, photographer and curator whose work explores trans sexual expression and desires.

“The reason for me it’s so important to show trans sexual expression and desires- there was a current representation happening in the mainstream and it was missing an agency and empowerment of trans desires.”

Sissy Screens Photo Editor Parker Blain interviewed Finn when he was a guest of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, curating the shorts series ‘Desires and Resistance | Unearthing Trans Legacies’. The series premiered at Outfest 2018 and includes his own film beside the water, 1999-2003.

In this video essay, the artist as narrator deftly mixes up sexual discovery, community formation and desert landscapes in a collection of erotic snapshots.

“I was grappling with being part of a culture with very little visual evidence of a past. What does it mean to be part of a culture which doesn’t have much (visual) examples of our history or proof that we existed?”
